It's not a 'Mac' anything however: Microsoft's Mac Business Unit (a division of Microsoft) set up Outlook for Mac (2011) so that it uses EWS. They made that decision in conjunction with their internal contacts in the Exchange group, so there was some sound basis for doing so. Most of all, it was an available & usable & modern method of connectivity, and for whatever reason(s) they had, they went that way rather than leveraging ActiveSync for Outlook for Mac. And disable Auto-Discovery on your clients via AppleScript if auto-discovery is causing a problem. We have a guy here who is very good with Macs. This is what he found - However, I found out that the address we had entered was actually wrong for the services required, and the reason my settings 'worked' was because Outlook continuously switches settings based on Autodiscover/Automatic settings when the original Exchange account is set up. If you set up the account using Autodiscover/Automatic settings, it will always poll services on the network and switch server addresses continuously. My settings had switched back to the internal address of to connect to the server--which is why I thought my manual settings had worked. Make mac os x bootable usb. In my testing, I could even watch the control panel GUI switch from my manually entered server address back to the Autodiscover address as it negotiated connections and services. Pretty wild stuff. Is this how you are set up? Sorry, I am in a bit of a rush today, but was hoping our experieneces might help. Not the article I used, but close enough. In my case, internal was mail.company.com and the external was exchange.company.com, which may not be your case, but if anyone else happens on this thread, this was my issue. So every time the Mac came on the internal network, it would overwrite the manually set external address. This setting is separate from the PC outlook settings, as EWS is only used by the Mac clients (well, not entirely true, but Outlook for Windows surely doesn't use it). Once I removed and reset the external to mail.company.com, it worked like a charm once auto discovered. I think your second comment 'Outlook 2011 using Exchange Web Services to connect to Exchange and get email' is my answer. Outlook for PC will connect directly to the server and then connect to EWS when offsite. I was hoping the Mac could do the same, but seems like unless you force it, it will always want to connect to EWS. And to add some confusion, the reason why I even ask is that Macs on my network seem to used way more data than PCs, when we looked into we found that most of the data was them accessing EWS.
